Florida Employment Report: Employee Confidence On the Rise in December

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., January 22, 2010 – The Florida Employee Confidence Index jumped 5.9 points to 49.4 in December, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of Florida workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reveals a surge in confidence, as the Index reached its 12-month high. The details of the report show that fewer workers believe the economy is getting weaker and more workers are optimistic about job availability.

Results from the Florida Employment Report:

  • Fewer workers believe the economy is getting weaker. Specifically, 27 percent of workers believe the economy is getting weaker, a decrease of 17 percentage points from November.
  • Sixty percent of workers believe there are fewer jobs available versus 81 percent in the previous month.
  • Fifty-nine percent of workers are confident in the future of their current employer, representing a five percentage point decline from November.

"Although the economic recovery in Florida appears to be slightly behind other parts of the country, it is certainly encouraging to see an uptick in confidence among Florida workers as we begin the start of a new year. Our latest Florida Employee Confidence Index hints that many workers are feeling a renewed sense of optimism in the economic landscape and job market,” said Paula Franco, branch manager for Spherion Staffing Services in Florida. “Additionally, we are beginning to see the demand for temporary employment rise, which is a good sign that the start of an economic recovery is near. We are advising job seekers to consider a temporary or contract assignment to get their foot in the door.”
