DALLAS, Texas, May 22, 2009 – The Texas Employee Confidence Index rose considerably in April, rising 6.1 points to 50.8, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, indicates that fewer workers believe the economy is getting weaker and more are confident in the future of their current employer.
Results from the Texas Employment Report:
- Forty-two percent of workers believe the economy is getting weaker, decreasing 23 percentage points from March.
- Nine percent of Texas workers believe more jobs are available, compared to five percent in the previous month.
- Seventy-two percent of Texas workers surveyed are confident in the future of their current employer versus 68 percent in March.
“Compared to the U.S. jobless rate, Texas is definitely faring better,” said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. “Although clients are still being cautious about adding staff, we have seen some pick-up in the last few weeks. In fact, we are seeing stable demand for work in customer service, mortgages, healthcare, IT and collections. Because a larger pool of applicants are competing for fewer job openings, we are advising job seekers to use this time to sharpen their education and certifications. This will help candidates stay current and give them the competitive edge they will need when the market fully recovers.”
